Section J: Transformation / Synthesis - 2013 P6 English Exam paper          

For each of the questions 66 to 70, rewrite the given sentence(s) using the word(s) provided. Your answer must be in one sentence. The meaning of your sentence must be the same as the meaning of the given sentence(s).    (5x2 marks)                                        

66.       Both Juliana and Sarah are not going to the concert.

‘Neither’ is used in a sentence in the negative sense when you want to say that two or more things are not true.

67.       Aziz did not want to go to the party. His friends tried very hard to persuade him.
No matter _____________________________________________________________
No matter how hard his friends tried to persuade him, Aziz did not want to go to the party.

‘No matter’ means ‘it doesn’t matter’. It is used with who, whose, which, what, when, where and how.

68.       Mr Roshan was teaching the pupils when the accident happened.
The pupils _____________________________________________________________
The pupils were being taught by Mr Roshan when the accident happened.

“When” can mean ‘at the same time as something else’.

69.       We could not believe that the concert was cancelled.
Much _________________________________________________________________
Much to our disbelief, the concert was cancelled.

‘Could not belief’ is changed to ‘disbelief’, a noun.

70.       “Did you find the solution to this problem?” I asked Joshua.
I asked _______________________________________________________________
I asked Joshua whether he had found the solution to that problem.


In reported speech, the present tense or past tense of the speech has to be changed to past tense or past perfect respectively.
